Sikkim, connecting India and China. It was once the major pass through which trade was conducted with Tibet but post the Indo-China war, the pass was closed down. It was only reopened recently and visitors are allowed till the border post. Trade has also resumed but only at certain specified times decided by both the countries. Located about 54 km away from Gangtok, the pass is at an elevation of about 14,140 ft, making this one of the highest motorable roads in the world. The route is beautiful and drive is exciting, especially when it is covered with snow in the winter months. However, if it snows or rains, the road is closed.Permits are required to visit Nathu La and they are available at the Sikkim Tourism offices as well as through travel agents. Only a certain number of passes are issued each day, so an application has to be made a day earlier. Plus the road is closed if the weather is bad, so keep a day or so in hand, especially during the crowded holiday periods. The pass is closed on Mondays and Tuesdays for visitors, so plan accordingly.
The elevation of 14,140 ft is not easy for small children and elders. Take appropriate medication if you are prone to altitude sickness. If you are travelling in winter make sure you have enough winter wear as well as gum boots with you. Gum boots, socks, and jackets are available for hire at the Tsongmo Lake, but not anywhere beyond. Photography is prohibited at the pass, so please comply with the rules. Combine a trip to Nathu La with the Tsongmo Lake (also called Changu Lake) and Baba Mandir.
