The elderly dignitary revealed that India and Bangladesh are jointly employed on a World Bank project to accomplish hassle-free travel of Indo-Bangla citizens without passport, and instead, use the Indian Aadhaar card number and the Bangladesh national registry.
Muazzem Ali, however, taking account of his ripe age and the time needed to execute the project, speculated that he might not live enough to witness India and Bangladesh turn into countries without visa. "It can take up to 10 years for implementing this system,” said Ali. He added that the Indian Aadhaar card does not state the citizenship of the holder and it is primarily a biometric card. Therefore, a special committee has been put together to work on the changes needed to implement the no-visa policy.
The diplomat also shared that the idea revolving no-visa countries was originally conceived in his mind during his tenure as an ambassador in France. "It is no more a dream. Travel without visa is going to be a reality and so there will be no requirement of passport. People will be able to move without visa and efforts are on for this," he said and added that diplomats and officials are now able to travel without visa.
