The city of Chennai is reeling under the impact of water shortage due to the delayed monsoon, as a result of which, the hotels in the city are grappling with the issue of water shortage.
Reportedly, the prevailing drought conditions in Tamil Nadu are the main cause behind water scarcity. Currently, about 8000 hotels across budget, mid-budget and luxury categories are running across Chennai. These days, most of these hotels are sourcing water from water tanks operated by private vendors. But, if the monsoon is further delayed, it will become extremely difficult to continue in such a dire state for long.
News has it that prior to the ongoing water crisis, the water tankers used to get water from water source located in 10 km radius. However, they are now going as far as 40-50 km to procure water. As a result, the hotels are paying twice the price they would pay for water from private vendors.
On its part, the hotels and tourist accommodations are trying to make their guests aware about the ongoing acute water crisis so that they cooperate in dealing with the situation. Humble notices are being put up in guest rooms and common areas in the hotels to accomplish this purpose. However, hotels are aware that they can only make a humble request rather than force their guests to use less water.
Reportedly, the serious water shortage in Chennai this season is also due to the shortage of monsoon in 2018. Already, the four huge water reservoirs in the city for meeting the water demands of the public have run dry, thus, creating mayhem in the day to day life of the citizens.
