Tourist gets fined for wearing bikini at a Boracay beach in Phillippines

A woman from Taiwan was reportedly slapped with a fine of 2500 Philippine Peso (INR 3470) for wearing a thong bikini at a beach in the Philippines. The tourist in question was visiting Boracay, one of the most popular islands in the Phillippines. It is reported that the woman and her boyfriend visited the beach twice in the same day, wearing a bikini, which was objected to by the onlookers.
She drew ire from the other tourists at the beach, who objected to her wearing inappropriate clothing in public. The onlookers, apart from raising an objection to her outfit, also posted her photos on social media. The same photos were spotted by the local police, which led to her arrest later. Eventually, she was slapped a fine of 2500 Phillippine Pesos.
It has also been reported that other tourists filed a complaint against her on the grounds of indecency. Reportedly, her hotel authorities also advised her against wearing the bikini though she brushed off the suggestion by stating that the bikini was a “piece of art”.

The incident, apparently, went viral on social media, leading to officials stating that tourists should “respect the country's culture and tradition". Malay Police Chief Major Jess Baylon, with reference to the incident, stated that "We have taken this action for other tourists not to follow. It was an eye-opener for resort owners to brief guests to dress appropriately.
