The Packard Plant

Detroit’s Packard Plant is the largest abandoned building in the world. Formerly an automobile factory, it closed in 1958 and was fully abandoned by the ‘90s, except by vandals, graffiti artists and the occasional ravers. Covering many blocks, the Packard Plant is easy to get lost in, with floors upon floors of open space, some of them actually growing trees and mosses from the sodden floors. Interesting sites include a room entirely filled with shoes, the occasional car-shell and occasional tourists. The site is littered with debris and rusty-pointy-things, so where your boots.

A lot of people find the place intimidating: once-in-awhile a body shows up around there, tending to convince residents the place is dangerous, but it’s really safe as a church. During the day the ruins are full of visitors coming out of curiosity, come to look at the graffiti art and read the strange messages on the walls. The floor is littered with spray paint cans, some of which have just a little paint left. So add your name to the wall amongst the many other visitors: who knows how long this gem will be last.
