The mystery behind the money trees of England

You must have heard the phrase, “money doesn’t grow on trees”. Well, when you see the coin trees in England, you might want to disagree on that! There are several places in England where one can spot trees hammered with coins. So, don’t be surprised if one fine day while walking through a forest in the UK, you stumble upon a tree covered in coins because that’s a common sight in the lovely touristy village of Portmeirion, in Gwynedd, North Wales.

Belief and superstition related to money tree
Money tree is basically a result of some ancient traditions and superstitions surrounding wishing trees. Some believe that this tradition used to bring good luck and health to people who would hammer the coin inside the tree trunk. Some also believe that if a sick person presses a coin into the tree, it will take away their illness, and if someone tries to take that coin out, then they will fall severely ill.

How this weird tradition started?

It is believed that the practice of inserting coins into trees began way back in the 1700s. During that time, people living in the region believed that by nailing low-denomination coins into the trees would help them get rid of their sickness, and also make them happy and healthy. And on the contrary, if someone removes the coin from the tree, he/she would fall sick.

While we don’t know how successful this practise was in healing people, but it does make for an interesting sight in parts of Britain. These trees are unique and mystical at the same point! So keep your eyes wide open to spot these trees when you are travelling to the UK next time.
