New Zealand’s fun attraction of swimming with dolphins at Bay of Islands is soon going to stop, as per the reports. This is being considered because tourists are apparently loving the animals way ‘too much.’ A popular activity among tourists, this decision to shut it down is going to be a major disappointment for them.
So now the environmental authorities here have decided to shut down the swimming activity for three years. The authorities are also planning to restrict boat tours for dolphin watching to only morning and early afternoon. Hence, this will cut down the tours from 30 to 20 min. The interactive session with dolphins used to mean that these dolphins had less time feeding, nursing, or sleeping. This is an essential move for their betterment.
According to a spokesperson from the Department of Conservation, “Research shows that interactions with the bottlenose dolphins is having a significant impact on the populations resting and feeding behaviour and that people are ‘loving the dolphins too much.”
Also, there is the possibility of a mammal sanctuary here at the Bay of Islands.
