About 34 kilometres from Chennai, on the outskirts of Mahabalipuram is located the Crocodile Bank, a conservatory and cushy home of hundreds of species of crocodiles. Utmost efforts are put in to provide keep the surroundings as au natural as possible for rearing the crocodiles. The sight of big reptiles basking in the sun and their unexpected movements excite the visitors here. One can also see the crocodile eggs and touch the bumpy back of the crocodiles. Being the biggest crocodile sanctuary in India opened by the state government, this place also houses tortoises, turtles and snakes. The facilities available include well-maintained restrooms, drinking water, a small and open-air rest area covered with roof. The authorities also organise a sound and light show on some specific days of the week. A small refreshment shop is also present in the precincts. Souvenirs and books can be bought from another on-site shop.
