Thailand's natural World Cup ‘trophy’ is here to stay

It’s hardly a matter of surprise when geological formations are also popular tourist attractions. Take for instance, the US' Grand Canyon, Australia’s Uluru or the Twelve Apostles, just like these, there are many geological formations that have, over time, formed into curious shapes and sizes.

There’s one in Thailand that has won the hearts of fans of football – the World Cup Rock in Pa Hin Ngam National Park.



The national park is located in the Chaiyaphum province in Thailand. It is known for its rich cultural heritage and breathtaking landscapes. The most striking feature of Pa Hin Ngam National Park is the Lan Hin Ngam. The World Cup Rock is located in this section of the national park.


This unique rock formation has drawn the attention of geologists, nature enthusiasts, and curious travelers from around the world.

Thailand's World Cup Rock is a sandstone formation that has, curiously, been sculpted in the incredible likeness of the World Cup Trophy, not by man, but by natural process of erosion and weathering.



There are other rocky formations in the area but this one stands out, and quite literally too. Centuries of erosion and weathering have led to the creation of these spherical boulders as well as other interesting shapes like that of a nail, radar and even a chicken!


It is a common sight to see curious and adventurous visitors try and click a photo or two with the rock. There are hiking trails that go through the park, offering opportunities for both leisurely strolls and more challenging treks. However, It takes a short hike through the lush forest of the national park to reach the World Cup Rock. Visitors can often be seen climbing the rock, not just to click fun photos but also to take a good look at the landscape that unfolds right in front of them. From the rock’s vantage point, one can see the vast lush plains surrounded by forest and hills.

There are accommodation and camping facilities too at the park, should you choose to stay here a little longer than just hikes. The national park is located away from the towns and cities so one can expect a quiet getaway here. One good thing about staying overnight in the wilderness is that it provides great stargazing opportunities.


But just like any other natural place, this one too, even though it is a rock, needs preservation efforts.
