Trump made this announcement on Twitter. However, other details have not been revealed as of now, including other specifics, time frame, or the scope of who would be affected.
Trump in his tweet stated, “In light of the attack from the Invisible Enemy, as well as the need to protect the jobs of our GREAT American Citizens, I will be signing an Executive Order to temporarily suspend immigration into the United States.”
Trump added that he is taking such an action to protect the US workforce. Reportedly, millions of Americans are suffering from unemployment after companies laid off employees amid nationwide lockdowns to stop the contagion. The decision, however, drew criticism from some Democrats, who accused the President of creating a distraction.
The US Citizenship and Immigration Services has already suspended routine in-person services, but it is still providing some emergency services.
The President has often stated that the pandemic has strengthened his desire to restrict access to the United States, and this announcement is seen as the latest in line with his desire to do so.
