A gothic styled church, the St Mary’s Cathedral is located on East Veli Street, Madurai, just about 2 minutes away from the Madurai Railway Station. The beautiful spiritual church has been built in an amalgamation of European, Continental, and Roman architecture, and has a grand appearance. The impressive structure of the cathedral attracts tourists coming in to the city of Madurai, and it also happens to be one of the oldest churches in India. The cathedral was founded as a church in the year 1840, and was then rebuilt in 1916. Later in the year 1938 the bishop’s throne was installed here, and it got the status of a cathedral in 1969.
