The oldest temple in Malayasia, it was founded in the year 1873. Sri Mahamariamman is actually a South Indian goddess, who is also known as Parvati, and her shrine is located at the back of this temple complex. The Goddess is worshipped largely by overseas Indians, especially Tamils. This is because she is believed to be their protector during their sojourn in foreign lands. The temple is largely visited during the festival of Thaipusam, and it is during this time when Lord Murugan is transported from the temple complex to the Batu Caves on a silver chariot. Lord Murugan sits on the right of the goddess, while the elephant headed Lord Ganesha sits on the left.
