As Indian mythology goes, once Shatashrunain Mountain was displaced (refer to Kotiteertha – The Holy Pond from the Himalayas by the mythological bird Garuda, the saints and monks living on it were agonized by the separation from River Ganga and wanted to bring it to Gokarna. It was not a usual task and the saints sought divine intervention by worshipping Lord Ganesha. The monks were guided appropriately to overcome the obstacles and bring the holy waters of Ganga to this part of the country. Today, the rivers of Gangavali and Aghanashini demarcate the town in the shape of a cow's ear and lend its name: Gokarna. These monks are credited for the installation of an idol of Ganesha with four hands. This avatar of Ganesha is believed to remove worries and aptly christened as Chintamani Vinayaka.
