In the 16th century, the Portuguese destroyed the original place of Santeri's worship in Kardavilan, now known as Quelossim, situated in the Salcete taluka of Goa. Its followers escaped to Kavalem and built a small shrine dedicated to Santeri. When the area later became a part of the Marathas, Chatrapati Shahuji Bhosle constructed this temple here in 1738 CE. Today, an obscure stone plaque at the entrance from the street displays this historic information. After crossing a pathway next to a small lake, just as you enter the complex, a huge open space separates the main building along with a beautiful deepa stambha or a lamp tower in front. Shri Shantadurga Vijayate temple remains open on all days and closes its doors to visitors at 10 pm.
