Located at a distance of 10 kms from the city borders, is the Basistha Ashram Temple shrine. The temple building that is erected right next to a small stream was founded by Ahom king Rajeswar Singh in 1764. Lord Shiva is the prime deity here. But as the name indicates, the temple gets its identity from sage Basistha (Vasishtha) who was a Vedic age figure and believed to have had his ashram in the same location. The mountain stream that flows by the shrine originates from Meghalaya and becomes river Bharalu once it enters Guwahati. Despite being a popular place among the locals for several pujas and other household celebrations, the atmosphere of the temple is relatively serene. Be it for spiritual reasons or plain nature trail, Basistha Ashram Temple is a must-visit while you are in Guwahati. One more thing, while you head towards the temple, your vehicle will make its way through the outskirts of Garbhanga Reserve Forest which offers a memorable ride for the visitors. The road is well maintained and is bordered by huge trees; just keep in mind the steep speed-breakers though! There is no need for any special permission to enter the territory that houses the shrine so just jump into a city bus that shuttles between the city and the temple or hire an auto rickshaw!
