There are three and a half Shakti Peeths or Centres of Divine Power are in Maharashtra namely – the Mahalakshmi Temple at Kolhapur, Tulja Bhavani Temple at Tuljapur, Renuka Temple at Mahur (Matripur) and the Sapatashrungi Temple of Vani. While, the first three are believed to be the repository of complete power, the Saptshrungi Temple is considered as ardha or half Shaktipeeth. Saptshrungi translates into 7 Mountains. Therefore, the presiding goddess of the Saptshrungi temple is known as the Goddess of Seven Mountains by the holy texts. There are around 108 water reservoirs on this Mountain and they are known as Kundas. The main shrine of the Goddess is on a hill top and witnesses a beeline of several pilgrims on Tuesdays, Fridays and the holy 9 nights of the Hindu calendar.
