Rumeli Hisarı

As with most of Istanbul’s “must visit” destinations, Rumeli Hisarı (also referred to as Rumeli Castle) has a long and rich history dating back to the 1450s. Shockingly it was built in only a few months, and its strategic location atop the hill at the narrowest point of the Bosphorus Strait have made it an important fortress ever since. Walking the grounds, while passing all the old canons, and climbing the steep steps of Rumeli Hisarı transports visitors back in time. Ascend to the highest point then close your eyes and imagine all that has transpired on the spot where you are standing. Now open your eyes and gaze in the breathtaking 180-degree view of the Bosphorus and eastern skyline. Don’t forget to revel in the fact that you are standing in Europe and looking at Asia. Although it only takes about an hour to cover the castle, depending upon your love of history and architecture, it is easy to stay longer. Photographers in particular will be impressed with the gorgeous view from Rumeli Hisarı.
Expert Advice: If offered or approached, do not book a private tour. Rumeli Hisarı is easy to get to by public transportation or taxi, simple to navigate, and the entrance fee is only 10 Turkish Lira (around $3.50 USD). Plus it is one of those historic places that is best to enjoy peacefully, rather than with a guide rambling on about details you will forget five minutes later.
