Sarahan and Bhimakali Temple

Sarahan was the capital of Bushahr Kingdom before it moved to Rampur on the banks of Satluj. Sarahan is located on a hill and you have to climb up this hill from the village named Jeori. Today it is a typical Himachali village with all the Kinnauri charm. It is the seat of family deity of the royal family of Bushahr. There is a huge temple dedicated to Goddess Bhimakali that houses several temples, beginning with an old Shiva temple built of stone. The façade of the temple is heavily carved in wood and you can admire the craftsmanship for hours. The door is carved in silver and carries inscriptions of various eras of temple. Main temple has two buildings, an old and a new one, both built in a similar fashion with tall structures with alternate panels of wood and stone and the top made of carved wood. Besides the idol of reigning deity Bhimakali, there is an idol of Gautam Buddha also in the main temple. In a side complex is a temple of local deity—Lankra Vir. A small museum showcases the items used by temple over years for prayers and festivals. No photography is allowed inside the temple but you can click pictures in the complex. There is also a palace complex not too far from the Bhimakali Temple that is partially open to the public. Best part of Sarahan is the view of Himalayas from the top of the temple that forms a vantage point.
