Rivers in India: A look into river tourism
From the Ganges in the north to the Periyar in south and Brahmaputra in the east, India is home to several major rivers that have historically played a crucial role in the development of civilisations and trade routes. Make no mistake, these are not the only rivers in India. With eight major river systems and more than 400 rivers, it’s safe to say that there are a lot of avenues for tourism activities in India.
River tourism in India is a unique and immersive way to explore the country's diverse landscapes, cultures, and heritage. Here are some notable rivers and regions known for river tourism in India:
Ganges
The Ganges is one of India's most iconic and sacred rivers. Destinations like Varanasi, Kanpur, Rishikesh, Haridwar and Prayagraj are particularly known for the Ganges. Visitors can experience the famous Ganga Aarti ceremony and witness the spiritual significance of the river. There are also cruises and boat tours that allow travelers to explore the cultural and historical sites along the river's banks. When in Rishikesh, don’t miss out on river rafting.
Brahmaputra
When in Assam, you can’t ignore the Brahmaputra River even if you wanted to. It’s difficult to not be amazed by such a mighty river. Cruises on the Brahmaputra offer a chance to explore the diverse landscapes, wildlife, and cultures of Assam. The Kaziranga National Park, famous for its one-horned rhinos, is often included in river cruise itineraries.
Backwaters of Kerala
A network of interconnected rivers, lakes, and canals create these pretty backwater areas. These backwaters offer a tranquil and picturesque setting for river tourism. Houseboat cruises are a popular way to experience the lush greenery, traditional villages, and serene waterways of this region.
Yamuna
If we can look past the recent flood situation in Delhi, we will find that by the Yamuna river, there are destinations and attractions so grand that they are impossible to ignore. Take the Taj Mahal for instance. Places like Delhi and Agra where one will find some of the most important monuments in the country, these places are right on the bank of Yamuna. Visitors can enjoy boat rides near iconic landmarks like the Taj Mahal.
Narmada
The Narmada River passes through central India and is known for its scenic beauty and historical sites. Tourists can enjoy boat rides in places like Maheshwar and explore temples, ghats, and forts along the river. Tourist attractions like Dhuandhar Falls, Omkareshwar, Satpura, Marble Rocks of Bhedaghat and more are all located by the Narmada river.
Periyar
The Periyar River in Kerala offers a different kind of river tourism experience. Visitors can enjoy boat safaris in Periyar National Park to spot wildlife, including elephants and various bird species.
Hooghly
The Hooghly river is a distributary of the Ganges and flows through the city of Kolkata. River cruises on the Hooghly offer a glimpse into the historical and cultural heritage of Kolkata, passing by iconic landmarks and colonial-era buildings. The river is also spiritually important for the people of Kolkata.
Mandovi
The Mandovi river is one of the most prominent rivers in Goa.
