Neelakurinji Bloom – the magnificent blue shrubs are back after 12 years in the Western Ghats

Neelakurinji, a shrub found in the shola forests of Western Ghats, attracts tourists every 12 years fro m all around the world, and this year it is back. Neelakurinji flowers appear to be bell-shaped and are responsible for naming Nilgiri Hills, as “Nil” means blue. There are 40 different types of Neelakurinji, and most of them are blue in colour. They were last seen in 2006, and you can catch them this year between August and September. You can catch the shorter variation of this shrub at higher altitudes, while longer ones at lower. Because this is an extraordinary sighting, tourists can avail special tours and treks that occur during that time of the year. Munnar is one place in the state of Kerala, located on the Western Ghats, which is known for Neelakurinji sightings. You can get superb views from Kovilur, Kadavari, Rajamala and Eravikulam National Park. Eravikulam is also known for being home to the endangered Nilgiri Tahr.
