Built in 10th century, Pura Tirta Empul is a temple of holy water. It is dedicated to Lord Vishnu. This is one of the important temples for Balinese Hindus, as they believe taking dip in the sacred water of Pura Tirta Empul will purify them. The highlight of the temple is large rectangular pools, which are filled with the water from a fresh spring nearby. There are around 30 fountains which fill these water pools. They are filled with devotees who come to take a dip and cleanse themselves. Balinese from all around are known to make a long journey for these sacred rituals which they believe will bring them good fortune and health. The temple is located 20 kms from Ubud and can be easily reached. Avoid visiting the temple on any holiday or religious holidays, as it gets really crowded with locals.
