Bumthang

Home to some of the oldest Buddhist monasteries and temples, including Jambey Lhakhang, Bumthang is famous as the religious heartland of Bhutan. This blessed land is full of tales of Guru Padmasambhava and the terton, considered to be the religious discoverers. Bumthang Dzongkhag consists of four main valleys which are Ura, Chumey, Tang and Choekhor. Choekhor being the largest of the four mountain valleys and is widely known as ‘Bumthang Valley’. These valleys are wide, carved by the early glaciers and draws a large number of tourists each year due to its exquisiteness. The origin of the name Bumthang is said to have two connotations. First it is named after Bumpa, a holy river vessel which the valley apparently resembles in shape. Second means the valley of girls as Bum means girl in local language and Thang means piece of land. Apple orchards and dairy farms are common sights here. Bumthang is considered to be one of the most serene region in Bhutan.
