As soon as the name of Nagaland comes up in the popular lexicon, gory images of head-hunting hunters with pierced tattoos on the body and spiked needles around the head and face occupy our imagination in no time. Setting foot on this land completely transformed the sight into a plethora of virgin carpeted valleys, series of blooming rhododendrons, out of the way hospitality and bonhomie of the natives and last but not the least, beautiful memories of those wonderful days spent exploring the popular places to visit in Nagaland. Seeped in history, Kohima, the capital city of this state, situated at a distance of close to 74 km from the city of Dimapur, carries the sacrifice of thousands of soldiers in the Battle of Kohima which changed the course of the Second World War. Dimapur is the gateway to this state and regular trains from Guwahati and Kolkata are available to this city. Regular flights by Air India also operate between Kolkata, Guwahati and Dimapur. The hornbill festival celebrated in the month of December is a potpourri of different tribal cultures dominating the cultural landscape of this region culminating in a week-long carnival of music and dance.
