Of all the points of interest in New Orleans’ French Quarter, none is more exciting, colourful and vivacious as Jackson Square; made lovely with the St. Louis Cathedral flanking it on one side. Hence, it is no surprise that it has been the favourite stomping grounds for many of the writers. On two sides of Jackson Square are beautiful single-storeyed row apartments with dark elegant pillars and beautiful running grill-work balconies. These are the Pontalba Apartments and were a very popular set of salons nearly a century ago. The location and the vantage view into the square with all its activity probably caught the imagination of the writers of the day and many of them rented or hung out there including William Faulkner, Somerset Maugham and Carl Sandburg.
