On the face of it, Guwahati might not appear to be too different from any other tier II city of the country with its rapid infrastructural development and commercial upraising. But this fact takes little away from the overall grandeur of the fast developing cosmopolitan city. To begin with, the presence of the mighty Brahmaputra (the city is located on the banks of the river) and the presence of many hills practically surrounding the city adds many unique scenic sights and sounds. Add to this, a rich history―Guwahati stands witness to numerous battles between the Mughals and the Ahoms (Assam’s most famous ruling dynasty). For the culture junkies, Guwahati is the place where one can find people from each of the 20 plus main tribes of the region. Adding political power to it, Guwahati houses Dispur, the state capital of Assam! Given a vast kaleidoscope of places to see, you could choose to pay a visit to some of the ancient shrines such as the Kamakhya Temple or the Basistha Ashram Temple. For the culturally inclined, there is the Kalakshetra or the Assam State Museum. Read on for a roundup of the most noteworthy places to visit in Guwahati.
