A small town located off Coimbatore, Pollachi is a gem waiting to be discovered. Derived from the Tamil word ‘PozhilVaichi’ meaning ‘the land of natural wealth and prosperity’, Pollachi is on the cusp of the Annamalai hills and the plains of Coimbatore. If you like nature and want to explore its unbridled beauty, this is where you must head to. With a landscape that has tea gardens, misty mountains and green tall trees that seem to touch the clods, the beauty of this place is certainly unparallel. This is where you can see green hills lined with perfectly manicured tea bushes, coconut trees that make a stark contrast against the blue sky and a rustic charm that is hard to miss. A melange of culture, religion and nature, this is a destination for all the right reasons. Little wonder then that this is a popular spot for shooting movies. In fact I am told that there is a movie being filmed here almost every day! The picture postcard landscapes apart, Pollachi has many secrets waiting to be unravelled and it is indeed a pleasure to discover what this charming town has to offer.
- Pollachi can get very hot so it is better to carry appropriate sun guards.
- Likewise the monsoons can be harsh, so make sure you have an umbrella handy.
- Dress conservatively as this is a small town. Entry to temples may become an issue if not dressed conservatively.
- Make sure not to litter the surroundings as this has a tendency to disturb the natural environs.
- Get chatty with the locals as they will let you into the many secrets of the place. In fact, Pollachi is also a major centre where cattle are traded. I also found out that this place is famous for Jaggery trade!
- Buy local produce especially tea which is grown locally and is as fresh as it can get.
