Once the home of the rulers of Travancore, this palatial structure is just an hour away from Kanyakumari near the Tamil Nadu Kerala border, in a small town called Thuckalay. This compelling structure has a number of must-see sections including the king’s chamber, performance hall, and palace complex. A particularly interesting section is the royal treasury on the ground floor of the palace complex, located just under the king’s bedrooms. The interiors and the woodwork of the palace are typically ornate—the king’s bedstead is made with wood cut out of 64 types of medicinal trees. Apart from the palace, the Veli Hills and the River Valli which flows nearby are other attractions to check out in the area
