Another attempt to launch Chandrayaan II is going to happen today, a week after the Indian Research Organisation (ISRO) postponed the launch. India’s mission to the Moon is having a momentous day as ISRO has completed the process of filling liquid hydrogen into the cryogenic stage.
Chandrayaan II’s task at hand is to explore the lunar south pole, which comes 11 years after the first mission to the moon. India’s first mission to the moon had exposed water molecules on the lunar surface; Chandrayaan II is now going to further investigate the Moon, and explore its south pole for more traces of water.
During the mission, the orbiter would be working on mapping the lunar surface from an altitude of 100 km, while the lander called Vikram would be making a soft-landing on the surface. The Pragyan would then be released on September 7, 2019. The name Vikram has been given after Dr Vikram A Sarabhai, who is the father of the Indian space research programme.
