Though a tropical country, Thailand sees a wide variety of different climates and landscapes, especially in the north. At Ob Khan National Park, just south of the city of Chiang Mai, instead of palm trees and giant tropical plants you’ll find limestone and igneous rock mountains covered in hill evergreen forest, pine forest and more. Within the park is the river source of the Wang River, the Win River and the Kan River and a collection of streams and waterfalls provide cool relief from the hot heat. Thai families will pack a picnic and head to relax by the water on the weekends. Additionally visitors can explore several caves, hot springs and hiking trails as well as camp overnight within the park’s grounds. (Note, however, that there is no camping available May 1 – August 31 every year.) With its close proximity to Chiang Mai, Ob Khan National Park is the perfect destination for a short day trip to get out of the city for a little R & R. Surprisingly, even though it’s easily accessible, you won’t see many foreign tourists here and if you come during the week may have much of the park to yourself!
