Yuksom was the first capital of Sikkim which was established in 1642 AD by Phuntsog Namgyal, who was also the first Chogyal of Sikkim. Norbugang Coronation Throne is the famous coronation throne of the first Chogyal of Sikkim. The coronation took place under a pine tree which is still present today. The Chogyals ruled this Himalayan Kingdom for close to 333 years. This historical place of archaeological significance is rarely visited by tourists and lies in a bit of neglect over the years. The stones which adorn the throne now seem to have been whitewashed beyond recognition. Just opposite to the throne is the famous Norbugang Chorten, which is said to contain water and soil from each and every part of Sikkim. There is a small lake known as Kathog Lake besides this place which was the source of ablutions done as a part of rituals by the local priests.

Good description of Norbugang and Yuksom. There is a stone adjacent to the rock throne that has foot mark of the head Monk who is said to have come flying in, being invested with mystical super powers. Yuksom also is the base on India side for Kanchenjangha (Khanchendzonga) trek that completes in Nepal. There are work class hotels, trekking guides, who provide for yak supported treks. Goechala Lake is one such target from here. Mountaineering lovers from across the world descend here. Yuksom borders Kanchenjangha National Park and is home to Bollywood superstar Danny Danjongpa.Read More
