Kheerganga is one of the most popular trekking routes in Himachal Pradesh, and the entire north India. Its hot spring, beautiful meadows and lovely weather attracts thousands of tourists every year. Over the last decade, a lot of eateries and camps had sprung up to do lucrative business by catering to the growing tourist count. All these illegal developments meant more trash and severe ecological disturbances in an otherwise quiet region, told the forest officials to the press.
As for the tourists who will miss camping in Kheerganga, they can still make to the meadow but only after seeking permit from the forest department. There would be no staying in tents at Kheerganga, even if you plan to pitch your own tent. Also, forest officials have clearly stated that permission to visit Kheerganga will be granted on the condition that the visitors do not litter around and carry their garbage along.
After a blanket ban put by the NGT in 2015 on commercial tourism venture in Rohtang, Marhi and Solan, Kullu’s Kheerganga is another addition to the list. After this move, the forest officials and the NGOs are hoping that Kheerganga regains its former ecological balance and health.
