The world’s largest portrait gallery, London’s famous National Portrait Gallery, is going to shut its doors for the next three years. The museum is shutting down owing to refurbishment work and will open up with some new provisions. The museum is set to shut down on June 29, 2020, and will open only in the spring of 2023. The museum is going to include new public spaces, and a new visitor entrance, among other things.
The National Portrait Gallery opened in 1856, and it was the first portrait gallery in the world. It is known for housing a collection of portraits of important British people. Today, it has the most extensive collection of portraits in the world. Entry to the gallery is free, much like a few other museums of London, and hence is a very important place for tourists to visit.
