National Chambal Gharial Wildlife Sanctuary

A boat safari along the Chambal River is the best way to get acquainted with its wildlife. Around 370 km from Delhi, National Chambal Gharial Wildlife Sanctuary is located on the Chambal River and hosts more than 320 species of resident and migratory birds in addition to gharial crocodile and river dolphin for which it is quite popular. Birdwatchers can catch glimpses of sarus crane, greater flamingo, brown hawk-owl, Pallas's fish eagle, Indian courser and darters, among many others. However, it is the endangered Indian skimmer that attracts a large number of visitors to this sanctuary. During winter months, the area is flocked by black-bellied tern, red-crested pochard and bar-headed goose. The best time to visit the place is from November to March.
