A brilliant example of Portuguese architecture, Diu Fort stands proud by the side of Arabian Sea. It was built in 1535 to protect the territory against Mughal invasion. This fort remained the centre of Portuguese rule until 1961 when Indian government merged Diu in India. A magnificent structure that was impenetrable against attacks, it has many a stories to tell. It also houses an impressive lighthouse that is open to visitors and a must-visit for photographers. Interesting frescoes adorn most of the walls here, quite a lure for the lovers of art and architecture. A perfect battle fort, it has centuries old cannons perched on its terrace. Other than an insight into the history and times of this region, a visit to Diu Fort will get you some very fascinating views of the stark blue Arabian Sea and the terrain around.
