Mumbai to get ultra-modern zoo worth 500 crore

Maharashtra might soon get an ultra-modern zoo in the suburbs of Goregaon, a facility that is slated to be at par with global standards. For this, it is likely that around INR 500 crore will be infused in building the zoo in the lush green environs.

As per the latest news reports, the said zoo will be spread across 100 ac and will have a host of jungle safaris and trails, a separate breeding centre, some unseen wild animals, nature education centre, and other facilities as per the guidelines of Central Zoo Authority (CZA).
As per the latest news reports, the proposed site in Aarey Milk Colony was inspected in 2014 by a CZA team, which recently gave its clearance. The colony was explored for the facility as there was no space to expand the existing 50 ac zoo in Byculla.

If everything goes as planned, the new zoo will be virtually adjacent to two popular tourist spots, the Film City and the nearby Sanjay Gandhi National Park (SGNP).
Recently, a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) was signed between the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) and Maharashtra Forest Department, which states that 100 ac of the 190 ac government land will be provided for setting up this ultra-modern zoo.
In the coming days, the BMC will be chalking out a comprehensive master plan for the said zoo, which will be carried out by its resources.

Also, as per the MoU, the forest department will be providing all the technical expertise that is required to procure various animals from the zoo and the other facilities which would help showcase the rich biodiversity of the country and the state.
