Stradun, or Placa, is the 300 m long main street that runs through the old town of Dubrovnik and is possibly the busiest street in the city. Starting at the Pile Gate on the western end of the walled city and ending at Ploce Gate at the eastern end, Stradun is lined with some of the most prominent historical landmarks that Dubrovnik has to offer. Walking along this charming marble tiled street is akin to stepping into the history of the city and giving visitors a chance to understand the political and cultural importance of many buildings, columns and fountains that flank the street. Some of the notable landmarks worth stopping at and spending some time at are Onofrio’s big fountain, Franciscan monastery and museum, Roland’s column, and Dominican Monastery. If you get tired of walking around, enjoy a meal or coffee at one of the many restaurants and cafés. Since it’s a popular place among tourists and a prominent business street for locals, expect crowds at all times during the day except later at night or really early in the morning, just after sunrise. If there has to be one experience that would define a visit to Dubrovnik, it would have to be a leisurely walk along Stradun.
