Mountain lakes in India with the bluest waters
Most mountain lakes are known for their unbelievably clean and clear water, and in India, we are fortunate to have so many of these mountain lakes. These lakes are also called oligotrophic lakes. Since these lakes are found in high altitude regions, some of them are completely inaccessible during winter season. Those that are accessible do come with challenges in the form of frozen lakes or snow covered trails. The summer months are the best time to visit these lakes as they are at their bluest best.
Gadsar Lake, Kashmir
Gadsar Lake is approximately 8 km from Sonmarg. This is easily one of the most scenic and popular lakes in Kashmir. During winter months, this lake remains inaccessible. June to September is the best time to visit the lake. The water is blue and you can still see lush greenery all around. Gadsar Lake is a part of the Great Lakes Trek in Kashmir.
Tsomgo Lake, Sikkim
Also known as Changu Lake, Tsomgo Lake is located just 42 km away from the capital city of Gangtok. The lake partially freezes over during the winter months, but it is open to visitors throughout the year. It is located at an altitude of 3,753 metres.
Gurudongmar Lake
Gurudongmar Lake is one of the most spiritually significant lakes in India. This lake is an important pilgrimage site for both Hindus and Buddhists. The lake is situated at an altitude of 5,183 metres above sea level. Interestingly,Gurudongmar Lake is one of the highest lakes in the world.
Tso Moriri
Located in the Changthang Plateau in Ladakh, Tso Moriri is an ecologically important site. The lake is a part of the Tso Moriri Wetland Conservation Reserve, and it supports a large number of rare and endemic birds and animals. It is an important breeding ground for the endangered black-necked cranes.
Pangong Lake
Pangong Lake is one of the most popular lakes in the country. For some die hard adventure travellers, Pangong Lake is more than just a pretty lake. It’s a yearly pilgrimage for them. Bike ride adventures to Pangong Lake is a dream for many. Apart from being a popular tourist destination, Pangong is also an important bird area. The lake is home to many migratory and endangered bird species.
Tarsar Lake and Marsar Lake
These two alpine lakes are considered to be twin lakes. Though there is a mountain standing in between these two lakes, they share similar features. They are both incredibly clean and blue, they both freeze during the winter months, and both lakes host migratory birds every year.
