Mountaineering and quad biking – there is unusual level of awareness and enthusiasm amongst the Tico's for cycling. The well-built roads, availability of resources, ability to purchase and maintain bikes has only made bicycling and mountain biking very popular. The two most popular destinations are Monteverde, and Tamarindo. However, you will often spot city dwellers spending the entire weekend in the valley area of San Jose, crisscrossing the capital in groups or solo. The alternating uphill and downhill geography of Costa Rica aids fascinating views and treacherous challenges to biking enthusiasts. There are numerous competitions that are held round the year along different regions of the country. Bikes clamped behind SUVs is a very common sight in this country.
