Less than an hour away from Vienna, Melk Abbey is located above the town of Melk. Built in 1732, this monastery sits high above the town. The abbey was found in 1089, when Leopold II donated it to Benedict monks. The modern day abbey was built between 1702 and 1736. A fun fact is that the gold colour wasn’t to impress, but because gold paint was the cheapest colour at the time it was built. You can also see the Schonbuhel Castle while here. You can reach Melk Abbey by train.
