Easy to reach from the capital city of Managua, Masaya is less picture perfect than Grenada but offers much in the way of charm, festivals and culture. One of the main draws here are the markets, the first being the Artisan or Old Market which was once a fort for Spanish soldiers and offers handicrafts from all over Nicaragua. The traditional market, on the other hand, offers everything from produce to spices to furniture. Another attraction worth visiting in Masaya is Laguna de Apoyo, a beautiful natural swimming spot where the water is kept warm and clean by underwater vents and has high sulphur content. Home to Parque Nacional Volcan Masaya, visitors who are looking to get up close and personal with a couple of smoking volcanoes will want to head here. Visitors have the opportunity to peer over the edge of the Masaya Volcano into the crater which continuously emits smoke and gas, an impressive site to anyone. With a total of five craters, two volcanoes and numerous caves, there is no shortage of things to keep you busy here. Stay in Hotel Casa Robleto or Hotel Regis for warm hospitality.
