Home to the city’s 12th century Belfry and the Provincial Court, the Market Square is a locality in the heart of the city, spread across one hectare. Mostly traffic free, the area is pedestrian friendly, which makes it a must-explore for those wandering in Bruges on foot. Also referred to as the Grand Place, the Market Square is flanked by medieval-style buildings, quaint cafes, alfresco restaurants, and horse-drawn carriages (a half-hour ride for up to five people, with a short stop at the Begijnhof). The nerve-centre of the city, the square is a fantastic vantage point in Bruges to take in the vistas of medieval sites all around (some are beautifully reconstructed also).
