Located in the upper town or Gornji grad Zagreb, the Lotrščak Tower is a striking landmark of Zagreb. The Lotrščak Tower was built in 13th century; it was part of the old fortifications, guarding the South Gate of the old city. Standing tall with four floors, with an observatory on the top, it provides a vantage point to soak in the 360 degree view of the capital. The tower is a tourist attraction for another unique reason. The cannon located on the top floor of the tower is fired every day at 12 to mark midday. It is believed that the cannon fired a shot at noon in the 15th century to scare away the Turks, who were camped across the Sava River. Zagreb escaped the destruction at the hands of Turks thanks to the cannon fire. Since 1877, a cannon shot has been fired at noon to mark this historic development. Climb on top of the tower after you have heard the loud bang. The stunning panorama of Zagreb will leave lasting impression like its unique history.
