Lost landmarks: Iconic destinations you can only explore online
Did you know there are tourist attractions across the world that you can no longer see in their physical form? Well, you can see them only on Google now. Read on why and what happened to these iconic tourist spots.
Original Penn Station, New York
It was an architectural marvel, which was designed in the Beaux-Arts style and opened in 1910. In no time, it turned into a landmark in New York City, and handled more than 100 million passengers annually by the 1940s. However, it was demolished in 1963 for Madison Square Garden, whereas the train hub had to be moved underground. Many locals were not happy with the decision, as the grand station was never preserved. Till date, some lament the loss of such a historically significant structure.
Duckbill Rock, Oregon
Duckbill Rock, located at Cape Kiwanda, was a famous sandstone formation resembling a duck's bill. Though not particularly grand, it attracted plenty of tourists for its quirky appearance. Unfortunately, in 2016, the formation was destroyed—not by natural causes, but by vandals. Video footage revealed that a group of people deliberately toppled the rock in retaliation for a friend’s injury there. Their actions robbed future visitors of the chance to experience the natural wonder.
Vidam Park, Hungary
While not quite on the level of Disney World, Budapest’s Vidam Park held a special place in the hearts of many. It was an amusement park that operated for over 60 years, with visitors returning generation after generation. Despite its popularity, financial difficulties led to its closure in 2013. The remnants of the park are still standing, but they now exude an eerie vibe. Abandoned rides and spooky artwork on the walls have transformed it into a haunting space, far from the joy it once brought.
Original Wembley Stadium, London
The original Wembley Stadium, opened in 1923, was a symbol of British football. In 2007, it was replaced by a newer, more modern version. While the new stadium offers more amenities and can accommodate more fans, long-time visitors feel nostalgic for the original, particularly lamenting the loss of its iconic twin towers, which added a unique charm.
Darwin’s Arch, Ecuador
Darwin’s Arch in the Galapagos Islands was a beloved spot for photographers and divers. However, due to natural erosion, the arch collapsed into the ocean in 2021. Now, only two small pillars remain, a sad reminder of the once-iconic formation.
