Located very near to the Manasagangotri (Mysore University) campus, Kukkarahalli Lake or tank is a serene water body. It has a high bund on one side, adjoining Saraswathipuraum, with the water spread outwards like a calm sheet. It is among the favourite haunts for Mysoreans for walking. The tank’s shoreline is approximately 3 km long, and is lined by trees and shrubs with park benches placed at intervals. The benches are set back a bit into the greenery, with shady copses around. They are ideal for a peaceful break or to gaze at sunrises and sunset, and to enjoy the light breeze that whips over the water’s surface. The tank is so tranquil and serene that it is believed to have been inspirational to writers like RK Narayan and Kannada giant Kuvempu. It is also a popular place for birdwatchers.
