A huge political row began over the advertisement, wherein Kerala government’s tourism department is shown promoting beef recipes. In the ad, the tourism department presented beef as their local cuisine, which people did not like. Religious activists started questioning the advertisement featuring and promoting beef recipes to boost state tourism.
A number of religious activists on Twitter even questioned the tourism authority about their timing as it was posted on the very day of Hindu festival Makar Sakranti, Pongal and Bihu on January 15.
A number of Hindus in India consider cows extremely sacred and, hence, in myriad Indian states, there is a complete ban on cow slaughter and is also considered a crime. However, the same law is not prevalent in many Indian states including Kerala, West Bengal, Arunachal Pradesh, Mizoram, Meghalaya, Nagaland, Tripura and Sikkim.
The controversial Beef Ularthiyathu is Kerala’s one of the special delicacies, and is quite popular in the Central Travancore region of the state.
