Egypt tourism sector overcoming dry spell, registers growth in tourist footfalls

The 2011 unrest in Egypt had left the destination in a dry spell as far as tourism is concerned. But now in a change of fortune for Egypt Tourism, tourists are finally returning to the enchanting destination once more.
According to a recent report, the tourism industry of Egypt has recently seen an upsurge as more tourists are found in the marketplaces of Egypt and even on the beaches of Red Sea. The numbers say that between the months of January to September of this year, 5.9 million tourists came to Egypt. While in 2016 the number was 3.8 million for the same period of time. Egypt has been ranked as the second fastest growing destination for tourism in 2017 by the United Nations World Tourism Organisation (WTO). It predicted a total of 8 million tourists by 2017’s end. It is interesting to note here that Egypt had more than 14.7 million tourists in 2010, prior to the revolution of 2011.


A large portion of the nation’s workforce was involved directly or indirectly in the tourism sector, which took a dip after the revolution. According to reports, Luxor has seen a steady growth in tourism since September. Also reservations for Nile trips have been on the rise, almost by 50 percent. The Egyptian Government moreover has been working toward providing security to tourists and is trying to change the perception of the nation in the eyes of the world.

The Egyptian Government is also concerned about countries who are still warning their citizens against travelling to Egypt.
