The Kanchi Kailasanathar Temple is a place that will be loved by both religious travellers and heritage travellers equally. After all, the temple is probably the oldest structure in Kanchipuram and was constructed by the Pallavas dynasty in the Dravidian style of architecture. Located on the banks of the Vedavathi River at the western limits of the Kanchipuram, the temple is dedicated to Lord Shiva and thus witnesses one of the biggest Maha Shivratri celebrations in the city with thousands of devotees thronging the place on the day of celebrations. The temple has been built in the tradition of Smartha worship of Shiva, Vishnu, Devi, Surya, Ganesha and Kartikeya, which, in Hinduism, is a practice which replaced the Buddhism.
