Kalaburagi airport is likely to start commercial operations in November, receives licence

Good news for those who like to fly! The Kalaburagi airport is reportedly going to start its operations in November, 2019. The airport recently received its aerodrome license from the Director General of Civil Aviation (DGCA), after officials from DGCA visited the airport in October.
The airport is spread over 742 aces of land, and the complete cost of building it has been INR 172 crore. It is part of India’s UDAN (Ude Desh ka Aam Nagrik) scheme, inching closer to provide air connectivity to the parts of India that were previously not connected by air. The scheme has been subsidised by central and state governments across the country, and has been instrumental in connecting parts of the country through air.


The airport has made several airlines interested in operating from here. Reports suggest that Star Air, which is an aviation arm of the Sanjay Ghodawat Group, is planning to operate eight flights every week initially, and later expanding even more. It has already announced flight operations between Hubballi located in North Karnataka, and Hindon, located in New Delhi from November 6. Kalaburagi borders Maharashtra and Telangana.
The license provided to the Kalaburagi airport by the DGCA can be suspended, modified, withdrawn, and furthermore, limitations and conditions can be imposed on it, in case of any violation of the Aircraft Act 1934, and Aircraft Rules-1937. Right now, the expected date of commencement for commercial operations is November 15. The state government is waiting for Prime Minister Narendra Modi to inaugurate the airport.
