Folklore Museum

South India’s rich folklore tradition is aptly showcased in the regal and elegant Jayalakshmi Vilas Palace located on the Manasa Gangotri (Mysore University) Campus. There are an estimated 6,500 exhibits collected from various parts of Karnataka, Andhra Pradesh and Kerala. The collection is very eclectic, giving you a glimpse of folk traditions of the region. Among the classic pieces is a wonderful collection of thogalu bombe (leather shadow puppets) that is traditionally used to represent scenes from the epics, Mahabharata and Ramayana. Also on display are impressive carved figures, painted masks, ceremonial headgear and musical instruments. Alongside is a collection of everyday household items from rural areas, which include utensils typically used in the preparation of food in villages. The central sky-lit wedding hall also houses the works of several well-known Kannada speaking authors and poets. On the mansion’s grounds are displayed a few intricately carved temple chariots.
