Jatayu Earth's Centre, a rock sculpture like no other

Do you all know what happened to Jatayu in the Hindu epic Ramayana? As per the epic, when Ravana was in the process of abducting Sita, Jatayu, the demi god tried to rescue her. A vicious fight ensued but the old Jatayu was eventually defeated by Ravana. Ravana clipped his wings so he couldn’t fly anymore. Jatayu eventually fell to earth and the place where he fell, as per the epic, happened to be the present-day Chadayamangalam village in Kollam district in Kerala.

Jatayu Earth's Centre or Jatayu Rock is a nature park situated 1200 ft above sea level. This attraction was opened to the public on August 17, 2018, and ever since, this has been a great tourist attraction. In fact, the attraction is one of the most visited ones in the state of Kerala. The main attraction of the park is the rock sculpture of Jatayu which is also the world’s largest bird sculpture.

About the Jatayu sculpture
This rock sculpture was sculpted by artist Rajiv Anchal. The bird measures a total of 200 ft in length, 150 ft in width, 70 ft in height and is spread across a total of 15,000 sq ft of floor area. To put it simply, Jatayu sculpture is massive.

As per its creator Rajiv Anchal, Jatayu Rock is a representation of Jatayu–the legend, and symbolises the protection of a woman’s honour and safety.

The locals and visitors flock to this place, especially on weekends. Located far from the city’s noise, traffic and busy life, Jatayu Rock is a perfect weekend getaway, a quick fun day trip for many.


You need not hike up a hill to reach, cable cars will bring you to this place. From the top of the rock on which the statue sits, the view of the neighbouring area is spectacular.
